Tamil Marriage Rituals

A sacred journey of love, tradition, and cosmic blessings — the complete guide to Tamil Hindu wedding ceremonies.

01

Muhurtham (Auspicious Time)

The Muhurtham is the divinely selected auspicious time for the tying of the Thali (Mangalsutra). Chosen by an expert Jyotishi using the Panchang, it ensures the couple begins their journey under the most favorable planetary positions. The exact minute is considered sacred and non-negotiable in Tamil tradition.

02

Nalangu (Pre-Wedding Ceremony)

A joyful pre-wedding ritual where the bride and groom are separately bathed in turmeric paste, symbolizing purification, prosperity, and a glowing complexion. Both families participate with folk songs (Kummi), laughter, and playful games that strengthen the bond between the two families.

03

Kashi Yatra

In this charming and humorous ceremony, the groom pretends to leave for Kashi (Varanasi) to become a sanyasi (ascetic). The bride's father lovingly persuades him to return by offering his daughter in marriage. It symbolizes the groom's transition from student life to householder life.

04

Oonjal (Swing Ceremony)

The bride and groom sit together on a beautifully decorated swing while women sing traditional Kummi songs. They exchange garlands, are fed milk-rice (Paal Sadham), and shielded from the evil eye. The swinging symbolizes the gentle rhythm of shared life ahead.

05

Mangalya Dharanam (Tying the Thali)

The most sacred moment of a Tamil wedding — the groom ties the Thali (the sacred yellow-thread necklace) around the bride's neck during the Muhurtham second, while Vedic priests chant mantras and musicians play the Nadaswaram. This act officially and spiritually seals the marriage.

06

Saptha Padi (Seven Steps)

The couple takes seven steps together around the sacred fire (Agni) as witness. Each step represents a vow: nourishment, strength, prosperity, joy, children, longevity, and eternal friendship. The Agni is considered the divine witness to the marriage.

07

Arundhadhi Nokkal (Star Gazing)

The groom shows the bride the star Arundhadhi (Alcor in the Ursa Major constellation) in the night sky. Arundhadhi is revered in Hindu tradition for her perfect fidelity. The bride is encouraged to embody the virtue, steadfastness, and devotion of this star.

08

Nichayathartham (Engagement Ceremony)

A formal engagement held weeks before the wedding day. Families exchange gifts, fruits, and sweets. The wedding date is officially announced and the bride and groom exchange rings. This ceremony binds the agreement between both families and marks the beginning of the wedding journey.
